English opener Alex Hales will take on command of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in absence of David Warner for the IPL 2018. According to the latest report by the BCCI, the England opener was bought for INR 1 crore from the Registered and Available Player Pool (RAPP) list by Sunrisers as a replacement for Warner on Saturday.
In the light of the recent ball-tampering incident, BCCI banned the Australian skipper Steven Smith and his deputy David Warner from the eleventh season of the Indian Premier League. New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson will be taking care of the side while Hales will be taking the opening position with Shikhar Dhawan along with leading the team.
Hales has a lot to offer as the captain. He is the only English player to have ever scored a century in the T20I format. Also, he is the only player in England squad to be featured in the top 10 ICC T20I batsmen rankings. He has played 52 T20Is so far and accumulated a total of 1500 runs batting at an average of over 31 and maintaining a strike rate of 140.
While he is a valuable player but in comparison to Warner who he will be replacing, his accomplishments dry out. Warner has scored a total of 2579 runs that include 26 fifties and a century in the games he has played since IPL 2014.
Despite having a proven track record, Hales did not attract any buyers in the auctions this IPL season even been marked with a base price of just INR 1 crores. On the other hand, his teammates Chris Woakes, Job Butler and Ben Stokes got a lot of attention.
This might be because of his performance in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League, where he didn’t impress much with his bat. His top score in the tournament was 46, while he remained below 20 in the rest all the matches.
