The middle-order batsmen could not keep the flow of runs and this is one of the biggest reasons for the defeat of Kolkata Knight Riders. Robin Uthappa and Rinku Singh lost their wickets by silly shots and Nitish Rana departed earlier, unfortunately.
- The departure of the opening pair
Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn succeeded to give the team a good start by making good use of the power plays. Narine slammed two sixes in the first over itself. He played with consistency and changed the face of the game by his powerful innings after Robin Uthappa dropped the catch in the spell of Tom Curran. This incident played a decisive role in the match as Billings managed to score 56 runs off just 23 balls.
- Poor bowling during death overs
The KKR franchise bought Tom Curran to accomplish the task of bowling in death overs. But he was thrashed by Sam Billings. Tom Curran came into the team as a replacement to Mitchell Starc. Vinay Kumar missed his line and length and conceded more runs in the penultimate over. Russell could not show his bowling performance at an impressive level and he was slammed by 15 runs in the 18th over.
