Gautam Gambhir was appointed as the Delhi DareDevils skipper on his return to the franchise after seven consecutive seasons. He was released by KKR on his personal request to return to his home team.Gautam Gambhir Gives Up Delhi Captaincy, Shreyas Iyer Takes The RoleComing to the current situation, he stepped down from his position and Shreyas Iyer was handed his cap with the immediate effect. Gambhir took this move bearing the responsibility for the poor performance of the team in this IPL edition. This decision was made in public in the presence of the owner of the franchise, Hemanth Dua,  the coach Ricky Ponting, Shreyas Iyer, and Gautam Gambhir himself by the Delhi franchise.

Gambhir seemed disappointed with the performance of the team after his return to the team after the span of 2008-10. This local boy came into the team with many expectations about the revival of the past glory of the team in the reign of Sehwag.

Currently, the team is in the last position in the points table after losing five of six games. He is expected to revive the glory of the team as the team finished in the sixth position in the previous edition. They will play Kolkata Knight Riders on 27th April at Feroz Shah Kotla.

Speaking to the press about his decision, Gambhir said, “I take full responsibility for the position we are in. And looking at the position, I have decided to step down as captain. Shreyas Iyer will take over from me. I still feel we have the team to turn things around this”.

In this context, Ponting expressed his support to Gambhir and said that he completely agree with him. He said that “Being the leader of the team, he (Gambhir) put his hand up and made the tough decision. I completely endorse (Shreyas) Iyer as captain. He has a huge future in the game and for the Daredevils as well. I would also like to congratulate Gautam on the decision”.

“As tough as it might be, it gives us a fresh start to perform from hereon. We can start fresh and look to make an impact. Looking forward to seeing how Shreyas does”.
