Indian Premier League provides a platform for young talents as well as senior players. This year, youngsters like Prithvi Shaw, Ankit Rajpoot, and Mayank Markande made mesmerizing performances and the veteran Indian cricketers like Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Gautam Gambhir are playing this IPL along with Captain Cool, MS Dhoni. Out of veteran players, Dhoni is the only player who succeeded to make his mark in this IPL. This 36-year old cricketer did not do well for team India as a match finisher but answered all the criticism by his performance in the IPL. Let us take a look at the reasons behind his bounce back in this tournament.
- Batting in the higher order
Batting in the higher order gave Dhoni some space to settle and give a better show as a batsman. He was down due to a sore back in the previous games but sweated hard to perform well as a match finisher which did not work well. So, the coach for CSK, Stephen Fleming, suggested him to bat at NO.4. He made a good stand along with Ambati Rayudu and contributed to the success of the team in the previous games.
- Additional Responsibility as a captain
The Rising Pune Supergiants announced Steven Smith as the skipper instead of Dhoni in the previous season. So, he strived hard to perform well as a batsman instead of struggling to grab captaincy. When the CSK franchise returned to competition, the decision to hand the Captaincy to Dhoni was prone to strong criticism. But Dhoni proved all the critiques long by shouldering both the responsibilities, as a captain, and as a player with utmost dedication. He scored 286 runs off eight games with a strike rate above 170.
- Handling the spin attack
Dhoni is handling the spin attack skillfully to score runs faster this IPL. He was in a wavy position last year to tackle the spinners like Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla. In his first game of this IPL, he fell prey to Mayank Markande. In the game against RCB, he slammed Pawan Negi and Yuzwendra Chahal with fiery hits and boundaries. His strategies to tackle the spinners and his good form are the reasons behind his match-winning knock against RCB.
- Mending his ways
He worked thoroughly on his flaws and managed to rectify most of such issues. Dhoni was down due to many issues like poor performance in death overs, too many dot balls, and poor performance as a match-finisher. He worked well to make up for his poor performance and became an efficient player as well as the captain overcoming all the hurdles.
