The BCCI Acting President Amitabh Chaudhary and the Chairman of the senior selection committee, MSK Prasad made some crucial announcements about the changes in the Test, ODI and T20I teams of India on May 8 at Bangalore. Let us take a look at the allocation of players in the respective teams.
Coming to the test teams, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were rested and Shardul Thakur, Karun Nair, and Kuldeep Yadav were included in the team. As Virat Kohli is going to play for Surrey in the England County cricket, Ajinkya Rahane will lead the test team.
In the ODI team, Kohli will be the captain and Siddharth Kaul, Ambati Rayudu, and KL Rahul was called into the team and Ajinkya Rahane was out of the team.
In the T20I team, Suresh Raina and Manish Pandey were back and Siddharth Kaul was called into the team to replace Jayadev Unadkat.
Shreyas Iyer will lead the India team A in the ODIs and Shubhman Gill and Prithvi Shaw are into the team along with Khaleel Ahmed and Krunal Pandya.
For the four-dayer team of India A, Karun Nair is appointed as the captain and the other members including the likes of Rajnish Gurbani, Hanuma Vihari, and KS Bharat.
Rahane was surprisingly out of the ODI squad though Kohli opted him as the perfect player for the team at No.4. The selection committee tried MS Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya but still, there is no one found to fill the void since the World cup 2015. Since Yuvraj Singh was out of form, the team desperately needs a batsman to play consistently at No.4.
Now, the committee needs to give a try on Ambati Rayudu, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer. Shreyas Iyer, the new skipper of Delhi Daredevils proved himself as a player under high pressure. Ambati Rayudu played well for CSK at the need of the hour and KL Rahul made nearly 40 percent of the score for KXIP in this series. The committee is running short of time to find a perfect batsman at No.4 as the World cup season is nearing.
Virat Kohli is going to miss out the test match against Afganistan which is the historical one. He is going to play England county cricket at that time. Though the Indian captain said that he will treat all the teams equal, his decision is a point of contention for the experts. On the other hand, he is going to lead two T20Is against Ireland. But he is heading to play his last county match against Yorkshire from June 25-28 this year.
When asked about this issue, MSK Prasad said, “Kindly talk to the BCCI secretary on this issue,” and Amitabh Choudhary said that “Be rest assured, everything is fine.”
The selection committee is fine with the absence of the captain Kohli for the first ever test match against Afghanistan as befriending to the conditions of England will be easier for playing in the County teams. MSK Prasad said that “Except Virat, the entire Test specialists are playing this match. Virat is missing out on a good cause. He is going out so that he comes well prepared for the England Test series. It is always good that he goes there and performs well and he is very keen. He himself wants to do extremely well in English conditions. It is a great opportunity for us to win the series.”
Rohit lost his place in the test team likely to Karun Nair. He did not find a place in India-A team indeed. On the other hand, the performance of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin in IPL did not yield them a place in the T20I team. Jayadev Unadkat lost his place to Siddharth Kaul and Shardul Thakur was entrusted with the pace-bowling department in the T20 team. Ambati Rayudu and Karun Nair will be likely tested to play at No.4 and if Karun Nair goes well, Rohit Sharma may lose his place to him for World cup 2019. Though Washington Sundar played well in the powerplays, his potential did not suffice to be included in the World cup team, opined experts.
Experts came to a conclusion that by the decisions of the selection committee, it is clear that IPL is not only about money.
