The BCCI is planning to organize IPL for women. The teams may feature all the popular cricketers worldwide including the players from Australia, England, and New Zealand. Yesterday, the BCCI announced squads for two teams including Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana. The qualifier match will be played between the two teams at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 22nd May at 2.30 pm, following the VIVO IPL 2018 playoff game on the same day. The intention of organizing this game is to promote women’s cricket.
The BCCI announced squads for Women’s T20 match featuring 26 players including star players from England, New Zealand, and Australia. Some of such crucial players are Meg Lanning. She will play for the IPL SuperNovas, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur. Another participant team, IPL Trailblazers will be led by Smriti Mandhana. The ODI captain of Women’s Cricket Team, Mithali Raj will play for IPL Supernovas.
Detailing about the match, CoA chairman Vinod Rai said that “This is being staged as a well-deserved exhibition to showcase the tremendous depth and capability that women’s cricket in India has achieved. We see it build into a women’s IPL tournament in a couple of years.”
Former captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, Diana Edulji said that “The idea was to promote women’s cricket and keep the momentum going. This is just to start and show that we can have a women’s IPL from next season. It’s just a thought.”
