IPL Captains Who Never Made It For More Than One Season

The IPL has seen many solid captains from India and overseas like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, David Warner, and Gautam Gambhir who captained the franchises for long years. Some of the captains lost their places after one season due to poor performances. Let us take a look at some of them.

  1. David Miller, Kings XI Punjab

He was the captain of the team in 2016 and played six matches but won only one game. By the time, he lost his place to Murali Vijay and warmed the bench for rest of the series. He did not live up to the expectations on him in that series.

  1. Glenn Maxwell, Kings XI Punjab

Glenn Maxwell was named as the captain of the Punjab team in 2017. He played 17 matches as the skipper and won seven games. He did not have the prior experience as a captain and dangled to handle the responsibility. There was an exchange of words between the mentor Sehwag and Maxwell regarding the irresponsible behavior of the skipper and as a result, Maxwell lost his position and in this season he played for Delhi Daredevils. In 2017, Punjab franchise stood in the seventh position and could not qualify for playoffs.

  1. Harbhajan Singh, Mumbai Indians

He was one of the solid players for the team since the inception of IPL. He was handed the responsibility after Sachin Tendulkar left the team in 2012. He had a mixed result as a captain and the team did well in the league stage and entered the playoffs. But at the end, they had to finish at the third position in that season.

  1. JP Duminy, Delhi Daredevils

JP Duminy led the Delhi Daredevils in 2015 after Kevin Petersen led the team in 2014. In that season, the team won five matches and lost eight matches and this invited immense criticism. As a result, he lost his place to Zaheer Khan for the next two seasons.

  1. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rising Pune Supergiants

Dhoni was the successful captain for Chennai Super Kings. As the Chennai Super Kings served a ban period of two years in the IPL, he played for Rising Pune Supergiants. In 2016, he led Rising Pune Supergiants team but due to injury woes, his team has to finish in the seventh position. So, he was replaced by Steven Smith in the next IPL season. Thus, Dhoni had a bad experience as a captain in that season.
