Afghanistan is about to start its preparation for two contrast cricket formats. They will play Bangladesh in a three T20I series and the solitary test against India within a week’s duration. The T20I series begins tomorrow. Practice for both the formats with a short gap seems a herculean task for the team in the month of Ramadan.
The inaugural test match against India was announced four months ago and the T20I series against Bangladesh was scheduled to be played at Dehradun a couple of weeks ago. The Afghanistan team has to practice for the test match in the morning and T20s in the evening. The skipper Stanikzai, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Mohammed Shahzad will play for both the formats.
The coach of Afghanistan Phil Simmons said that he likes to schedule more practice matches but with the short break between both the series, he has to make the most out of available time. He said that training the team for both the test match and T20s at the same time is very hard but it will be fine if the test match is conducted prior to the T20 series. He is working hard to train the team to achieve success against both the solid teams.
Afghanistan reached Greater Noida and started their practice sessions two weeks ago to get acquainted with the hot weather and they had to enter Dehradun five days ago amidst tight security. They were ahead of Bangladesh in the ICC rankings with a minimal difference.
Rashid Khan is bowling spearhead for the Afghan team and Bangladesh relies on Shakib-Al-Hasan. Both the players represented Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2018. Both the teams faced each other in the World T20 game in 2014 in which Bangladesh won by nine wickets.
Rashid Khan joined the team yesterday after playing for World XI on Thursday at the Lord’s. Bangladesh team reached Dehradun four days ago. The team has to take on Afghanistan team without their star pacer Mustafizur Rahman. He was injured in one of the IPL games.
The Rajiv Gandhi international stadium accommodates 25000 spectators and this is the first international game in the state of Uttarakhand. So, the organizers are expecting a good number of spectators for the game on Sunday.
