Former Australian Captain, Ricky Ponting is about to take charge as one of the coaching staff for Australia for the series against England. He will work along with head coach Justin Langer. Earlier, Langer has played under Ponting for several years. Ponting is one of the versatile cricketers of his time in the world. He is about to act as commentator for five ODI series against England followed by a single T20I. This series begins from 13 June.
Earlier, this duo worked to coach Australia for a T20I series against Sri Lanka in 2017 on their home soil. Due to the ball-tampering scandal in the late March this year, Darren Lehmann stepped down as the coach for the Australian team. He was replaced by Justin Langer. Ponting coached Delhi Daredevils earlier. Ricky Ponting is the player for Australia in the World Cup-winning squads in 1999,2003, and 2007. He is the captain of the World Cup-winning teams in 2003 and 2007.
This 43-year old cricketer’s entry delighted his former teammate, Justin Langer. He said “Ricky is one of the greats of the game, and since he was already in England doing some commentary we saw it as a great opportunity to have him join our team for this important series. We have played a lot of cricket together and coached alongside each other previously, and he will also know many of the players already through his work with the team over the past two summers and his BBL commitments.”
“Ricky’s knowledge of the game is second-to-none, and we know that his experiences, tactical expertise and leadership will be invaluable for this group, as we start to build a team capable of winning a World Cup in these conditions in a year’s time.”
Ricky Ponting will join the coaching squad on June 10th along with his broadcasting duties.
