Ireland lost its first T20I due to the failure of crucial players and reluctance to the spin-attack of Indian bowlers. Some of the other flaws are, dropping Rohit Sharma twice and lack of planning to encounter Indian batsmen. Here are some of the reasons why Ireland lost to India in the first T20I.
- Lack of strong bowling attack in the first 15 overs by Ireland
The Irish bowlers failed to collapse the opening stand of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan in the first 15 overs. This is a failure of fielding department as well. The poor performance of the bowlers and frequent deliveries outside the off-stump caused the opening partnership to continue upto 160 runs. The perfect combination of left-hand-right-hand batsmen for the opening stand made India make an impressive score of 208 runs off 20 overs.
- Dropping Rohit Sharma twice
Rohit Sharma slammed 97 runs in the first 15 overs after being dropped twice. The opening stand of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan is one of the best in the World. They were in good form and thrashed the Irish bowlers with 160 runs. But unfortunately, Rohit Sharma lost his wicket and missed out his third T20I century with a difference of three runs. He scored 97 runs off 61 balls.
- Inconsistent Partnership
The players except James Shannon failed to establish good partnerships. James Shannon slammed 60 runs off 31 balls and the only highest partnership from Ireland was between Shannon and Andrew Balbirnie of 40 runs. Shannon fought a lone battle afterward and failed to support the team due to lack of a good hand to support him and rebuild the innings.
- Failure of crucial players
The key players like Paul Stirling and Kevin O Brien could not contribute to the victory of the team. Paul Stirling was dismissed at the score of one run in the first over itself and most of the crucial batsmen could not score more than 10 runs. Andrew Balbirnie is the only batsman to score 11 runs. The new comers like Stuart and Simi Singh also failed to score some impressive runs.
- Failure to encounter wrist-spinners
The spin-duo of India, Yuzwendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav managed to pick seven wickets together. Kuldeep Yadav picked 4 wickets and conceded 21 runs and Yuzwendra Chaha picked 3 wickets off 38 runs. Yuzwendra Chahal managed to pick the wickets of crucial batsmen like Kevin O Brien, and Gary Wilson. Kuldeep Yadav picked the wicket of James Shannon, the top scorer of the match. The spin duo is expecting to perform well keeping an eye on the long tour to England. It is exciting to see how can the Irish team encounter the leg spinners after learning a big lesson from their defeat in the first T20I.
