Kuldeep Yadav and Rishabh Pant turned many eye balls by their performances in the recent past and are expected to get a call from the selectors to play for the test team. There are speculations about replacing Ravindra Jadeja by Kuldeep Yadav and Wriddhiman Saha or Dinesh Karthik by Rishabh Pant.Kuldeep Yadav picked 21 wickets off 44.3 in the tour to Ireland and England. He is in great form that the selectors could not resist from calling him into the test team. Rishabh Pant may be called as a reserve wicketkeeper though he is an uncapped player. He slammed decent knocks in the games against England Lions and West Indies A to get a call from the national team if they need a keeper-batsman.
On the other hand, since Jasprit Bumrah’s presence in the test team fell into doubt due to injury woes, the selectors need to look for a speedster into the test squad. He did not play a test match since August after the test match against Sri Lanka. He took five wickets when India registered an innings victory. He picked 9 wickets from two test matches at an average of 20.77 and average of 38.6.
He picked 5/24 in the first T20I at Old Trafford and picked 6/25 in the first ODI at Trent Bridge. He took 17 wickets in the ODI series against South Africa in which India clinched the title with the lead of 5-1. He is known for his chinaman deliveries with a variety in line and length. He picked four wickets in the deciding Test against Australia a year ago. However, the selectors were in a dilemma whom to drop to pick Kuldeep Yadav, either Ravichandran Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja. Ravichandran Ashwin was one of the successful spinners for India since two years in the test format. Ashwin picked 300 wickets from 54 test matches and stood as the fastest spinner to achieve this record.
Ravindra Jadeja is the second highest wicket -taker for India in the tests last year. He picked 54 wickets from 10 test matches. He has a better average and economy rate when compared to Ashwin. He is the no.1 all-rounder for India and picked 150 wickets from 32 test matches. He is the second fastest left-arm spinner to achieve this record.
Jadeja picked 9 wickets at an average of 46.66 at a strike rate of 104 from 4 test-matches. It would be a surprising move from the team to drop one of the most successful spinners. Kohli’s statement, “there might be a few surprises in there” before the ODI series confirms the decision of selectors.
Coming to the selection of wicket-keepers, Saha’s appearance in the series will be doubtful in the first half of the series. He needs some more time to recover from the injury to his left thumb. Dinesh Karthik replaced KL Rahul in the third ODI against England. He replaced Saha in the two-day game against Afghanistan.
Rishabh Pant plays for India A and slammed 67* off 71 balls to guide India towards the victory against West Indies A and clinched the series. He slammed 37* off 54 balls to guide India A towards the victory against England Lions. Rahul Dravid, coach of India A spoke in favor of selecting Rishabh Pant into the test squad. Mohammed Shami cleared the mandatory yo-yo test and joins the pace-bowling department that includes Ishant Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Umesh Yadav, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
India will play the first test match against India on 1st August at Edgbaston, followed by the tests at Lords’ on August 9, at Trent Bridge on August 19, and Southampton on August 30, and the final test match will be played at Oval on September 7.
