Akshay Wadkar attained the berth in the India red team instead of Abhishek Gupta who faced doping allegations. Abhishek Gupta is the keeper-batsman banned on account of doping allegations till September 14th this year. Akshay Wadkar will be the wicket-keeper for India Red team for Duleep trophy.
BCCI said that the selectors are not aware of allegations on Abhishek Gupta. Duleep trophy will be played from 17th August to 8th September. Abhishek Gupta was suspended for 8 months in January on account of doping violations in June 2017. His suspension period started on 15th January and ends on 15th September 2018.
The BCCI statement reads “It was brought to notice by the BCCI Anti-Doping team that Mr. Abhishek Gupta who was initially added in the India Red squad is serving an 8-month ban for a doping violation. The Senior Selection Committee has reached a consensus that Mr. Akshay Wadkar will be included in the India Red team as Mr. Gupta’s replacement,”
Akshay Wadkar is the keeper batsman from Vidarbha which won the Ranji trophy this year. He played six first-class games and played nine matches as the list-A player. Abhishek Gupta was handed suspension for doping violation using a substance called terbutaline, generally found in cough syrups. The explanation given by Gupta was accepted by the BCCI earlier in this June and he was selected into the India Red team.
Yesterday, the selection committee met to select the squads for Duleep tournament. Parthiv Patel will captain the India Green team, Faiz Fazal will lead India Blue team, and Abhinav Mukund will act as the captain for India Red team.
Abhishek Gupta played six first-class matches, nine T20s, and six list-A matches earlier. The BCCI called back the decision of selecting him into India Red team adhering to the norms of ICC.
