The warm-up match before the test series between England and India was commenced yesterday between India and Essex. Though the Indian top order lost their wickets early, they made a modest score of 322/6 by end of the first day. Shikhar Dhawan got dismissed earlier and Cheteshwar Pujara also lost his wicket at a low score. The English wicketkeeper James Foster managed to pick the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and Shikhar Dhawan.
The decision of shortening the duration of warm-up match raised a few eyebrows but the Indian coach explained that the move was made on account of hot weather in England and grassy pitches.
Murali Vijay made a consistent performance after two consecutive failures for India A. He remained calm and patient to slam a half-century in this game. He slammed English bowler Mathew Quinn with clean shots and showed that he is ready to face pacers like Stuart Board and James Anderson.
KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara are competing for the No.3 position in the test team. Rahul slammed 68 in this innings to rebuild Indian innings. When the Indian team lost Virat Kohli and Murali Vijay, KL Rahul entered the crease and posted a decent score. He smashed bowlers like Aron Najjar and Matt Dixon to score a decent fifty to show that he is back into form after he was dropped from the squad for the third ODI against England.
Ajinkya Rahane came at No.4 and made a decent start but failed to encash it. By the end of the first hour, India were 29/2 and after 14 overs, India scored 44/3. Virat Kohli scored 41 runs. Dinesh Karthik stood as the highest scorer in the match after coming to play at No.6. It seems that this is a good opportunity for Karthik to cement his position in the team as the match finisher.
