Why Dinesh Karthik Should Open For India In Lords Test

Dinesh Karthik got the opportunity to play for the test team after a long time. He stood as the top scorer in the warm-up match against Essex and the trio of Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, and KL Rahul jointly made 82 runs in the first test match which is a collective failure. Hence, the experts are suggesting to promote Karthik to the opening position.Dinesh Karthik’s Last Ball Six

  1. Opening woes

Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay failed in the first test match to make a decent score. Dhawan scored 39 runs and Murali Vijay slammed 26 runs from both the innings. Though Dinesh Kartik could not make a decent score in the middle order in the first test, it is a good option to promote him to the opening position since it creates a scope for him to perform well.

Vijay and Dhawan made 1679 runs for the opening stand from 39 innings at an average above 44 but the average fell to 22 in the first test. Hence, it is good to experiment with a new combination since Vijay and Rahul made 472 runs from 20 innings at an average of 16.55 and Dhawan and Rahul have an average of 65 from 9 games. The poor performance of Dhawan and Rahul in the first test opened doors for a new option in the opening slot.

  1. Successful opener

Karthik proved to be a successful opener in England and in 2007 this keeper batsman scored 263 runs from 6 innings during the tour to England. This is the highest score by an Indian batsman in England in a test series. He played tough innings against pacers like James Anderson and Monty Panesar and scored three half-centuries from six innings in 2007. His experience as a youngster in England will be an asset to the team.

3.Team statistics

In the absence of Dhoni, the team needs an elegant keeper batsman. Due to the poor performance of KL Rahul, India can opt for Dinesh Karthik in the second test match due to his experience in England.  KL Rahul or Karun Nair may replace Karthik at No.6 when he is promoted to the opening position. This may not be the long-term solution, but the team comprising of 6 batsmen and 4 bowlers needs keeper batsmen in addition. To bring a balance in the team, Karthik is the immediate option.
