India lost the first T20I against Australia at Gabba cricket stadium, Brisbane by 4 runs. The spectators and experts felt that India’s win against the weaker Australian team will be a cakewalk but it was not that at the end. India needs to fight hard against the hosts to keep on the voyage of triumphs in the T20I series going.
The Australian innings ended by 17 overs due to rain at 158/4. The Indians needed to finish 174 runs from 20 overs but the visitors failed to chase the given target despite the heroic fight by Shikhar Dhawan. Shikhar Dhawan slammed 76 runs off 42 balls. The Indian team seemed to give a good fight though many players are new to the Australian climate and conditions lack of experience of some players was pointed as the reason for the failure at the nick of the moment.
There was a lot of opposition for the decision of resting MS Dhoni from the T20I team but both the wicket keeper-batsmen Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik gave a good fight for chasing the huge target. They seemed to achieve their motive but collapsed at the end. They succeeded to post 51 runs before the last four overs though they both are in different phases of their T20I career.
Rishabh Pant was chosen as the wicketkeeper in T20Is for the first time. In the 14th over, with two fours and a six, he succeeded to add 25 runs with his pace between the wickets. Though Karthik seemed to be slow and steady to hit boundaries, he gave a strong stand to the young wicketkeeper.
Dinesh Karthik seemed to be fade away but with his performance in the Nidahas tournament earned him the national call-up again. He did not make the most out of the opportunities in the previous series but he slammed 30 runs off 13 balls in the game against Australia at Gabba. This is the best strike rate from the Indian side and matched the strike rate of the Indian captain. His cameo included two fours and a six.
India’s middle order woes were one of the causes for this failure though the bowlers did a great job. Though Krunal Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav were consistent in their performance, in this game, Krunal Pandya was slammed by six sixes from four overs and Khaleel Ahmed gave away 42 runs from three overs. Khaleel Ahmed can gain huge experience by this tour and can understand the conditions of the bouncy grounds of Australia.
KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma could not make a good start and by the time Virat Kohli came to bat, the run rate required was very high. Virat Kohli might slide to fourth place in the batting line up to repair the middle order woes in the upcoming game. After a decade of a blazing career as a wicket-keeper, batsman, and a captain, MS Dhoni was removed from the T20I squad. This might be a good opportunity for the selectors to choose one from Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik as a backup wicketkeeper before the ICC world cup 2019.
