Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane made a strong 189 run partnership for the third wicket to make India give a good start by victory in the first one-dayer. The young Indian team made its first victory on the soil of Durban. Earlier, India lost six one-dayers in Durban out of seven ODIs and one match’s result left undefined.
Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma made a good start to chase 270 runs to compensate their poor performance in the test series. Rohit scored two fours and a six encountering 30 balls before he got dismissed by Morne Morkel. This is the fifth time in his career Rohit gave his wicket to Morkel. He was caught out by Quinton De Cock on mis-hitting.
Before Shikhar Dhawan got out at the score of 29 runs for 35 balls, Kohli and Dhawan made a good score and Kohli played some attractive shots irking Tahir and Chris Morris.
Ajinkya Rahane entered as the fourth batsman as expected earlier. Kohli and Rahane kept on playing scoring shots and kept the run rate stable. Kohli scored 50 runs in 56 balls. Kohli did his 46th half century in his ODI career.
Kohli and Rahane made their third- century partnership in consecutive matches. Their scores read as 104 and 109 respectively in earlier matches.
Duplessis continuously changed bowlers like Duminy and Markram to break this partnership but in vain.
Rahane made his fifth consecutive fifty off 60 balls, 24th one in his ODI career, equalling the records of Tendulkar and Dravid to do this feat. Soon, Kohli-Rahane reached 150 runs partnership surpassing the record of Sachin-Dravid partnership score for the third wicket.
Kohli made his 33rd century in ODIS off 105 balls. This is his 18th ton while chasing.
This duo got parted when Rohit got dismissed by Phehlukwayo when team India was 14 runs away from the target. Kohli also got dismissed by Phehlukwayo when his score was 112 runs.
Finally, Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni finished the match by scoring the remaining runs giving the team 1-0 lead in the ODI series.
Earlier, Du Plessis inspired the Safaris with his ninth century in his ODI career and the second one against India. Kuldeep Yadav and Chahal restricted their score to 269 runs by taking 3 and 2 wickets respectively. Chris Morris did 37 runs who stood as the second highest scorer for the South African team.
This is the fourth match both of the captains scored their tons in the same match. Kohli did this feat thrice.
