The Sandgate scandal is once again in news courtesy of fresh comments made by Bancroft and Smith. However, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes that there will be no fresh upheaval from the Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft’s recent statements and it will most likely “raise a few eyebrows”.
Ponting who was speaking to Cricket Australia’s official website, ‘cricket.com.au’ said he is shocked by the statements of the ball-tampering duo.
Ponting was referring to Bancroft’s statement that he gave in an interview with the Fox Sports where he alleged that David Warner was the one who encouraged him to tamper the ball. This statement is not what Smith gave who has claimed that there was a Cricket Australia’s now ousted top official who encouraged the ball tampering with his ‘win at all cost’ culture by stating to players like “we don’t pay you to play, we pay you to win”.
Ponting addressing to fresh statements said, “Now that those stories are out there, it’s going to be interesting to see what the reaction is tomorrow in newspapers and news channels. There’s enough in those stories to raise a few eyebrows.”
It might be true that the fresh controversy will have no impact on the national team, as Ponting has said, “I think the guys that are not banned have had long enough to move on from that sort of stuff.”
“I’m pretty sure that Painey (current captain Tim Paine) and some of the other guys, they have to leave that behind and move on and worry about what’s happening in the middle of the MCG.
“Because right now, the series is an absolute fever pitch so the fewer distractions the better,” Pointing said referring to ongoing Test series between India and Australia.
