IPL 2019 might be conducted overseas due to general elections in India. BCCI is still working on making a decision about the venue. One of the BCCI personnel said that the board is working to conduct IPL 2019 in India but the venue will be fixed on the basis of dates of the general elections in India.
He said that ” While the effort is to keep the entire tourney in India, a lot will depend on the dates of the general elections”.
Earlier, IPL was conducted twice abroad. Once in 2009, the entire IPL season was conducted in South Africa due to general elections. In 2014, the IPL was conducted in UAE. IPL is scheduled to be conducted in Mid-March and might end in the first half of May since all the national cricket boards asked their players to report back at home two weeks before the commencement of World cup 2019. The World cup is scheduled to kick start from 30th May 2019.
The BCCI officials are discussing about four options for conducting the IPL 2019. One is to conduct the entire tournament in UAE or South Africa like earlier seasons or to conduct some matches in India in venues without conflicts before the general elections or to conduct the tournament partially in India and the rest of the season abroad.
One of the BCCI officials said ” We are also planning to advance the whole league to March-April, like in 2010 so that it can finish ahead of elections and there is a good rest period for the players before ICC World Cup”.
Though the IPL auctions came to conclusion, there is no clear decision about the venue for IPL 2019. So, there is still confusion about the decision due to the delay in announcing the date for general elections in India.
