Markram to head South Africa Against India in ODIs

Dismissal of Francois du Plessis because of the finger injury, has led batsman Aiden Markram to lead South Africa in the remainder of the ODI series. Captain for the upcoming T20I series is yet to be decided as Plessis was declared unfit for the T20I series as well.

Markam who has the only experience of two ODIs under his belt is endowed with the huge responsibility to lead the team in absence of du Plessis. The situation is tougher for him as AB de Villiers is also not present in the team, at least for first three ODIs.

Cricket South Africa announced, “We’re aware Markram is new to the setup but he’s always been part of our plans since his U-19 (captaincy). We want to have a pool of leaders.”

In U19 World Cup in 2014, however, Markam has led the South African team to victory. In addition to that, he also captained the local Titans team this season.

According to Markram, “As a little boy, you dream of captaining your country one day.” He added, “(It’s a) super humbling experience. What happened to Faf in Durban was a freak incident. I officially heard (about me becoming captain) first thing this morning. It’s something you can’t take for granted. I enjoy captaining and it’s gonna be an additional pressure to deal with. Hopefully, it’s a good pressure.

“I’ll keep sending messages to Faf on and off the field asking for advice. I’ll definitely consult senior players for the best interest of the side,” he concluded.

Hosts played against India in the first ODI at Durban. India won the match with a large margin that brought the team to no.1 in ICC ODI rankings.
