Delhi Daredevils are rechristened as Delhi Capitals from this IPL season. Though the team seems stronger with a blend of young and experienced players when compared to other seasons, many experts underrate the strength of this team. Shreyas Iyer, who dons the captain’s hat, is an exceptional strength for the team and Shikhar Dhawan shifted to the team after breaking his long relationship with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Here is a preview about the team’s strengths and weaknesses.
Formidable top order
The top order is a blend of young and arrogant batsmen along with experienced players like Shikhar Dhawan. The team bagged players like Shreyas Iyer and Prithvi Shaw amidst tough competition and Rishabh Pant makes the team one of the stubborn top orders this year. The team’s think tank took care of the team composition by including foreign players and all-rounders in sufficient numbers. The franchise decided to work on resolving top order woes which caused huge defeat in the previous tournament.
Arrogant bowlers like Kagiso Rabada and Trent Boult are the strongest assets for the team. The team included one of the fiery bowlers, Keemo Paul, who picked 17 wickets from 13 T20Is as a backup bowler, even if Kagiso Rabada, Trent Boult, and Chris Morris are rested from the tournament as a part of world cup preparations.
In addition, the think tank of the franchise which includes Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting worked on picking experienced players like Amit Mishra, Shikhar Dhawan, and Colin Ingram who have impressive records in the limited overs format.
The team lacks consistent spinners exclusive of Amit Mishra. Since Feroz Shah Kotla is a favorable ground for spinners and most of the home games will take place in Delhi, the team has to work on selecting the perfect spin bowlers to make the most of home advantage. Sandeep Lamicchane is one of the best back-up spinners but he might be rested for the second half of the series since he is a foreigner. Shahbaz Nadeem is another consistent spinner for the franchise since few seasons but was traded to Sunrisers Hyderabad for this season. He might not take part in the complete tournament due to world cup season.
Mohammed Shami was out of the team and Bandaru Ayyappa, Nathu Singh, and Avesh Khan lack experience in T20I format. Ishant Sharma is the only quality pacer for the team. Keeping the balance between Indian players and overseas players in mind, the team composition is considered as fragile when it comes to the bowling department.
Hanuma Vihari is an added strength to the team but his position of batting is still a mystery. The franchise might use him as a middle-order batsman or a finisher. Here is the predicted XI for Delhi Capitals.
Shreyas Iyer(captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Kagiso Rabada, Amit Mishra, Rishabh Pant, Trent Boult, Hanuma Vihari, Akshar Patel, and Colin Ingram.
