IPL 2019: Absorbing conditions, Reading Batsman Key to Success-Nabi

Mohammed Nabi is another influential Afghan bowler along with Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in this IPL season. He made another match-winning performance against Delhi Capitals by picking wickets of Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant by conceding 21 runs. There are very rare occasions that Sunrisers Hyderabad lost a match in the presence of Mohammed Nabi. He averages for nine wickets at the strike rate of 15.00 at an economy rate of 5.27 per over. He played a pivotal role in the victory of SRH on seven occasions with the above figures.

He holds the record of best performance of 4/11 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in which the franchise won by 118 runs in this season. He slammed the match-winning 17 runs against Delhi Capitals yesterday. In that game, SRH won by 5 wickets.

He admitted that absorbing and adapting to the conditions is the key to his success. He added “As a bowler, I try and absorb the conditions as quickly as possible, because it’s about the conditions. If you see the last game, we got over 200. This was a different track so you have to be able to change your plans immediately,” he said. “We’ve been playing together for three years so the combinations take care of themselves. We wait for our chances and when we get them, we give 110% and that is the key to success.”

During the Powerplays, he picked Dhawan and after conceding 19 runs, he dismissed the most dangerous man of Delhi Capitals, Rishabh Pant.

When asked about his capability to pick wickets, he said that reading the batsman is the technique behind it. He said that having Rashid Khan in the team is an additional advantage to collapse the line up of the opponents earlier.

He said “When Rashid and I play together, be if, for Afghanistan or any team, that is when I have to help him a bit in terms of what the batsmen are thinking what types of fields to set,”

“If you can bowl a lot of dot balls then the batsman will definitely make a mistake. If you only chase wickets, you may not get them and you may get hit. This what we discuss … the correct field positions, how to not give easy singles. Because it is not easy to score off Rashid since he is a very different type of legspinner.

“He is quick and sharp through the air, he has a good googly which is not easy to read for batsmen and thus they end up taking more time at the crease and that’s how they make mistakes against him.” He concluded.
