IPL 2019: Why Kolkata Knight Riders Is Having Such A Hard Time Defending Totals

Kolkata Knight Riders are failing to chase totals on many occasions. They were in a formidable position with 4 wins from seven games earlier in the IPL points table but surprisingly fell to the third position from the second position. Overdependency on Andre Russell is the biggest flaw of the team, say experts.

KKR Dots An Impressive 71 Runs Win Over DareDevils

They were tied with Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, and Kings XI Punjab with eight points but slightly ahead of them due to stable run rate. Mumbai Indians might beat them if they win their game against Kings XI Punjab. Horrifying truth about KKR is, they lost all the three games in this tournament in which they batted first. They are highly dependent on Andre Russell and he handed the victory for the team with his all-around performance in four occasions in IPL 2019. He slammed 42, 60, and 45 in three out of seven games.

Top order woes

Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn are wonderful opening pairs among all the teams. But they could not meet the expectations upon them after a 94-run opening stand against Rajasthan Royals. Though Nitish Rana could do great in the middle order, he lacks a strong stand from Shubhmann Gill since the beginning of the tournament.

Robin Uthappa is still fighting poor form and Dinesh Karthik made a decent score against Delhi Capitals but failed to do so in the rest of the occasions. Hence, the team needs to repair the top order to have a slot in the top half of the points table. They managed to score 109 against CSK after a critical position of 76/9 after the failure of the top order.

Bowling issues

The team is suffering a lack of death over bowlers. Though Prasidh Krishna and Harry Gurney are playing consistently, the spin trio is struggling to restrict the opponents and pick quick wickets. Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav, and Piyush Chawla are the crucial spinners for the team but could not do up to the mark in the past. In the game against Delhi Capitals, they could not defend the total of 10 runs as Kuldeep Yadav conceded 5 runs when the DC needed 6 runs.

They could not adopt the conditions of Delhi and failed to clinch the game at the last moment. Against CSK, they could not restrict the experienced batsmen of Chennai.

The top order should do consistently and the spinners should perform according to their potential to cruise the team from a tough phase in this tournament.
