ICC World Cup 2019: Indian Squad Analysis

The BCCI announced 15-man squad for the ICC world cup 2019. The selection shocked many fans as the likes of Ambati Rayudu and Rishabh Pant are excluded from the squad and Dinesh Karthik who is doing not so good is included.  In addition, Ajinkya Rahane, who did well as an opener in 2017 was excluded from the squad after being tested at No.4.

The selectors went for three specialist speedsters namely Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Hardik Pandya and Vijay Shankar were added as all-rounders. Selecting pacer-batsmen and three specialist pacers stunned many fans ignoring the inclusion of as many spinners in the squad.

Ignoring Siddharth Kaul, Khaleel Ahmed, and Shardul Thakur did not surprise many since they did not perform up to the expectations. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzwendra Chahal are the crucial spinners and Ravindra Jadeja and Kedar Jadhav are spin-all rounders. Kedar Jadhav played the role of the part-time spinner and did well with the bat as well whereas Ravindra Jadeja was not impressive with the bat. But his consistent fielding earned him a place in the squad. The team comes up with seven bowling options in total.

Dinesh Karthik attained the berth in the squad as a back-up wicketkeeper in the absence of MS Dhoni. Though Rishabh Pant is an arrogant hitter, his poor wicket-keeping skills are the reason for his exclusion. Experience is the important factor that made the selectors choose Dinesh Karthik over Rishabh Pant.

Ambati Rayudu was the best player in the Chennai Super Kings team in 2018 but he made a poor start in 2019 with an average above 30 from 10 innings. Though KL Rahul is fighting poor form, his ideal strike rate allured the selectors to choose him as a formidable middle order batsman. He is experienced to serve as the opener as well.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, MS Dhoni, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Ravindra Jadeja are the part of the 2015 world cup squad. Choosing Vijay Shankar to accompany Hardik Pandya as a pacer-batsman seems a daring move by the selectors since the former lacks experience. India stands at the top of ICC test rankings and wants to regain the past glory by clinching the world cup. Fans expect team India to reach the finale at the least and any other place seem disappointing for them.
