Speaking on his excitement to play under the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) banner, the former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has said he is really honored to play under the captainship of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the IPL 2018.
On the CSK website, Watson was quoted saying, “It is going to be a real honor to play for such a great franchise with the history that the Chennai Super Kings have, and the thought of playing under the great Mahendra Singh Dhoni excites me a lot.”
The Australian player has played for Rajasthan Royals between 2008 and 2015 and in the last two seasons, he was in the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad. He said it will be little weird to play for CSK as the team was Rajasthan’s biggest rival. He said, “It is going to be a little strange initially as CSK were one of Rajasthan’s big rivals which started way back in the first year of the IPL.”
“But it won’t take that long to subside.”
In the present season of the Big Bash League, Watson played for the Sydney Thunder and proved to be a valuable player. Watson took retirement from the international cricket in March 2016 but he said he is still in love with the game and is motivated to play each match. He said, “I still absolutely love playing the game, which is an easy motivation in itself. I still love the thrill of the unknown of every game and I am extremely competitive and so I have no problem with motivation at all for each game.”
The Australian batsman said that the CSK squad with likes of MS Dhoni, Jadeja and Raina is very well balanced as compared to previous years. “Any CSK squad with Dhoni, (Suresh) Raina and (Ravindra) Jadeja as a starting point is going to be incredibly good and is always going to compare really well to the previous years,” he quoted.
Chennai has been one of the most powerful franchises in the IPL prior to its two-season ban from the league. The team has won the title twice and finished runners-up on four occasions. Not to mention that CSK qualified for playoffs in all the seasons from 2008-2015.
Shane Watson is a valuable player who has an average of 21.63 in the IPL playing 102 games in total and scoring 2,622 runs at a strike rate of 138.65. He has claimed 86 wickets so far.
