Duminy To Lead South Africa Against India in T20I Series

Due to the absence of captain Faf Du Plessis due to injury, JP Duminy is expected to lead the South African team for T20I series against India. Cricket South Africa announced the 14-player squad for three T20 series against the men in blue on Tuesday. The star performer of the Pink ODI, Heinrich Klassen, and the uncapped player Christiaan Jonker was accommodated into the T20 team.

DuminyJonker stood as the highest scorer for the Warriors team in Ram Slam T20 title like Reeza Hendricks who played for the team in T20 series against England in June 2017 and Hendricks did single digit scores.

The CSA national selection panel convener, Linda Zondi said that “Christiaan Jonker has been one of the most explosive finishers in domestic T20 cricket in recent seasons and his selection, together with that of Junior Dala, gives players who have performed well at franchise level the opportunity to show that they can compete at the highest level. Heinrich Klaasen’s recent performance speaks for itself. Reeza Hendricks gets another opportunity for the same reason, having been the highest runs scorer in this season’s RAM SLAM Challenge.”

The test specialists Markram and Hashim Amla were given a break considering the upcoming series against Australia and AB de Villiers were back into the team after a long break from the international cricket. To provide more chances to Tabraiz Shamsi and Aaron Phagiso, Imran Tahir was given rest for the T20I series.

“With the Sunfoil Test Series against Australia starting only 5 days after the completion of the T20 Series it is necessary for us to rest some of the players who have featured in virtually all our international matches so far this summer. These include Hashim Amla and Aiden Markram among the batsmen as well as most of our frontline fast bowlers. AB de Villiers has missed quite a lot of cricket this summer so he will play in the T20 Series.

“We have also decided to give Imran Tahir a break. He remains our first-choice spin bowler in both white ball formats. But we need to give more game time to Tabraiz Shamsi and Aaron Phangiso. The next ICC World Twenty20 is not all that far away in 2020 so it is important that we develop and examine our resources for that tournament,” Zondi said about team composition.

The three T20I series commences on 18th February at Johannesburg, the second one on 21st February at Port Elizabeth and the final T20I will be held at Cape Town on 24th February.

The South African squad for T20I series against India are JP Duminy(Captain), Junior Dala, Reeza Hendricks, Christiaan Jonker, Ab De Villiers, Farhaan Behardien, David Miller, Heinrich Klassen, Dane Peterson, Chris Morris, Tabraiz Shamsi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Aaron Phangiso and Jon-Jon Smuts.

He added, “With no franchise cricket scheduled for that weekend it gives another group of fringe players an ideal opportunity to show what they have to offer against the top quality opposition,” about team selection of South Africa A.

The Australians will tour to South Africa for three days. The three-day game will be played from 22nd February at Sahara Park Willowmoore. Khaya Zondo will lead the team of South Africa A which includes newcomers like Zubayr Hamza, Pieter Malan, and Senuran Muthusamy.
