The Indian wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has broken the highest T20 Catches record set by the SriLankan cricketer Kumara Sangakkara in the first T20I against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.Dhoni achieved this feat by dismissing the South African batsman Reeza Hendricks when Bhuvaneswar Kumar was bowling. This victory gave the Indian team 1-0 lead in the three T20I series.
MS Dhoni took 134 catches in the T20s and Sangakkara took 133 catches in 254 matches whereas the Indian wicketkeeper played 275 T20 matches. Sangakkara had 59 stumpings in his account making total 192 dismissals. If franchise matches are taken into account, Dhoni made 204 dismissals with 134 catches and 70 stumpings.
Dhoni is lagging back by only three wickets for highest international record of T20 dismissals. This record is in the name of former Pakistani cricketer Kamran Akmal. He played 201 matches and was responsible for 207 dismissals in the T20s in total.
Speaking about third place, Dinesh Karthik is the man with 123 catches in 211 matches and 48 stumpings making the count of dismissals reach 171 in total.
Dhoni played 87 T20 internationals and took 48 catches and did 29 stumpings, making a total of 77 dismissals. He stands behind Akmal in this context as Akmal made 32 stumpings in his T20I career.
Dhoni did not make a considerable impact in the game against South Africa so far but attempted to rebuild the innings in the need of the hour besides mentoring the wrist spinners in the ODI series. Dhoni is about to lead the Chennai SuperKings franchise for the IPL edition 2018.
As the World Cup season is nearing commencement, his place in the team India is unreplaceable. He is expected to make his mark in the rest of the series and series against England and Australia. The IPL this year is more anticipated with the return of Chennai SuperKings and Rajasthan Royals into the competition.
