As the excitement for the IPL 2020 is building up, teams are planning and working overtime to make strategies that will give them a leading edge in the UAE.
A key to making a head start in IPL is to have strong opening combinations. In the Indian Premier League, it is historically seen that teams with effective and stable opening combinations have done well. If the openers making the effective use of the powerplays provide a blistering start to the team, there is enough for other batsmen to build on.
Keeping that in mind we look at the most destructive opening combinations that can set the IPL 2020 on fire.
- Rohit Sharma – Quinton de Kock (Mumbai Indians)
Rohit Sharma is one name who has been immensely successful at international level but for some reason, he has not been able to find his mojo in the Indian Premier League.
The Mumbai Indians skipper does not have an impressive average in the last three IPL seasons. He has averaged 30 in the seasons for the last three years. But in this regard, we can say that Rohit Sharma has played in the middle overs mostly which can be a reason for his poor performance.
During the last season, we saw Sharma getting up to a good start regularly but for some reason, he was not able to convert them into big scores. IPL 2020 can be a good opportunity for him to perform.
Mumbai Indians had a good time choosing Quinton de Kock ahead of Royal challengers Bangalore in the IPL auctions last year. He was a major factor for Mumbai Indians title win during IPL 2019. Quinton de Kock can provide Mumbai Indians with the much-needed boost at the start of the play.
- David Warner – Jonny Bairstow (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
For Sunrisers Hyderabad the pair of David Warner and Jonny Bairstow is most likely to be the winning combination.
Last season the duo did not disappoint and provided patterns with some blistering performances and gave Sunrisers Hyderabad a good start. Warner was returning after his infamous ball-tampering saga while Bairstow was making his IPL debut. Both the players ended up with exceedingly well performance. In the 10 games, Bairstow scored 445 runs at an average of 55.62 and an outstanding strike rate of 157.24. Warner was even better with his orange cap winning performance after finishing with 692 runs at a brilliant average of 69.2.
This season as well Warner will be back with SRH for IPL 2020 and we believe he will be paired with Bairstow.
- KL Rahul – Chris Gayle (Kings XI Punjab)
KL Rahul’s performance in the Test cricket last year was one of the reasons why he was handed the skipper role by Kings XI Punjab for IPL 2020.
Hi ODI performance during the same period was also impressive at 70 while T20 average was an impressive 53.83. It is evident that Rahul has worked on his consistency and has matured as a player.
Ever since IPL 2018, KL Rahul has been the star performer for Kings XI Punjab as he amassed 659 runs during 2018 season and scored 593 runs in IPL 2019 becoming the second-highest run-getter in IPL 2019.
A confident Rahul can be paired with Chris Gayle, who brings in more experience. Gayle who is thought to have reached an end of his glorious career has impressed with his performance under the Punjab banner.
Kings XI Punjab can use opening pair of Rahul and Gayle for IPL 2020.
