The local boy Gautam Gambhir was appointed the captain of Delhi DareDevils for the current edition of Indian Premier League. He was bought by the franchise for Rs.2.80 crores in the auction at Bengaluru on January 27th and 28th.
All were surprised by the decision of Kolkata Knight Riders to not to retain this player. He has the record of leading the franchise to the title win in 2012 and 2014.Sources say that this player requested the franchise to release him as he wanted to return to his home team.
Ricky Ponting, the head coach of the Delhi DareDevils reportedly confirmed the appointment of this local lad as the captain of the team for upcoming IPL 2018.Ponting applauded the captaincy skills of the team’s new captain and expressed enthusiasm to work with him. He expressed his optimistic views about the youngsters and their teamwork to win the maiden title for the Delhi franchise.
After the auction of the players, Ponting said “If you look at his leadership, we did not find any fault when captaining KKR. His last season of IPL also has also been very good. So we thought it would be good to have him as captain working with some of the young Indian players. So, we have gone for an experienced captain and I am sure he will do the job for us.”
Gambhir did significant efforts to play a key role in the victories of the Kolkata Knight Riders for seven consequent seasons including title victories in 2012 and 2014 as a captain since he entered the team in 2011.
Besides being the skipper, Gambhir did great in guiding the youngsters and put collective effort for the team’s success being the forerunner at the need of the hour. He is one of the highest scorers from the team for many editions.
Gambhir is returning to the home team for the second time. He played for Delhi DareDevils for the period between the years 2008-2010. He scored 4132 runs at an average of 31.78 with 35 half-centuries out of 148 IPL matches.
