Robin Uthappa was one of the good hitters for the team Kolkata Knight Riders. He was supported by the former captain Saurav Ganguly to be appointed as the captain. As the IPL season is nearing, most of the names came into the limelight like Chris Lynn, Robin Uthappa, and Dinesh Karthik. Due to the injury woes of Chris Lynn, Robin Uthappa and Dinesh Karthik remained in the race of captaincy. Robin Uthappa has been playing for the team since four years. There were speculations about naming him as the captain of KKR for the current edition of Indian Premier League. But all are surprised about the management’s decision to appoint Dinesh Karthik as the lead. Here are a few reasons that made Karthik a better option than Uthappa to lead the team.
- Experience as a Captain
Karthik has a vast experience as a captain. He led the Tamil Nadu team for the Vijay Hazare trophy in 2009-10. He led the Tuti Patriots team in the Tamil Nadu premier League for the season of 2016. He captained the India Team Red in the Duleep Trophy 2017. On the other hand, his counterpart Uthappa did not have this level of captaincy experience other than leading India team A for a few months in 2013.
- Consistency in Performance
Dinesh Karthik can do well as a wicket-keeper besides being a formidable middle-order batsman. He is playing for the franchise for ten years. He got huge amounts of Rs.12.5 and 10.5 crores for the seasons 2013 and 2015. In 2017 he played for Gujarat Lions at a strike rate of 143 at an average of 36.10.
- Lack of options
The franchise lacked options to replace Dinesh Karthik. In the previous edition, he played for Gujarat Lions. He had to return to KKR as Gujarat Lions was out of competition for the current edition. Due to injury woes, Chris Lynn lost hopes of representing the team and playing with his own vigor. So, the management looked for Karthik and handed him the post of the captain for the current IPL season.
- Manish Pandey and Suryakumar Yadav returned to their home-teams
The vice-captain in 2015, Suryakumar Yadav was expected to captain the team for the current edition. The franchise invested a huge sum of money on him. He was bought by Mumbai Indians for the current season for Rs.3.2 crores. He won the confidence of Gautam Gambhir to lead the team. Gambhir said, “He is someone to look out for in the future and he has a very, very bright future.” Yadav led the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team for the year 2014-15. Manish Pandey has a good average above 50. He was retained by the Hyderabad Sunrisers franchise for Rs.11 crores for IPL 2018.
