The franchise managed to retain David Warner before the auction and got back Shikhar Dhawan through the right to match clause. Earlier, the franchise was dependent on openers but they had a fragile middle order. This time, they bought Manish Pandey and Deepak Hooda to overcome these shortcomings. They were in good form and did well for their domestic teams. Manish Pandey did a consistent performance in the Nidahas tournament.

The franchise brought back Kane Williamson who has a good T20 experience. The team included Shakib Al Hasan and Carlos Braithwaite who are in the best of the form to thrash the bowlers. This year, the team is one of the strongest batting sides in the IPL.

This duo holds the record of highest partnership in the IPL with 229 runs off 92 balls. The team managed to retain Quinton de Kock and Brendon Mc Cullum to replace Chris Gayle. Quinton De Kock did a great job for the Delhi DareDevils earlier. The experienced batsmen like Colin de Grandhomme, Moeen Ali, and Chris Woakes were known for their elegant performance and the team included solid players of IPL like Parthiv Patel, Mandeep Singh, Manan Vohra and Pawan Negi.
