- Narayan Jagadeesan
This right-handed batsman played a crucial role in domestic cricket in the 2016-17 season. This batsman made an outstanding performance in the TamilNadu Premier League 2016. This promising cricketer of TamilNadu did a startling performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament in 2018 by scoring 152 runs at the strike rate of 129.91 at an average of 38.00. He will be the best option for the skipper MS Dhoni if he wants to opt for a young and energetic opener. He scored 216 runs off 13 T20s at a strike rate of 127.05 with an average of 30.85.
- Shane Watson
Watson is one of the greatest cricketers in the contemporary world. This versatile medium pacer can handle pace and spin at an elegant style. He had a long experience in the shortest form of cricket. This quality batsman made 331 runs in BBL 07 at an average of 36.78 at a strike rate of 139.08. He was bought by the CSK for this season for a deal of Rs.4 crores. He had the experience of opening for Rajasthan Royals earlier. He played 258 T20S and scored 6455 runs at an average of 29.20 at the strike rate of 138.45.
- Faf Du Plessis
This South African skipper was a fiery batsman and can handle all kinds of bowling styles at an ease. He was retained by the franchise by RTM clause for a deal of Rs.1.6 crore for IPL 2018. He opened for the CSK team earlier and was capable of playing in almost all the batting positions. He scored 3855 runs from 172 T20s at an average of 27.34 at the strike rate of 124.31.
- Sam Billings
This keeper-batsman has done very well in the BBL 07 this year. He scored 156 runs at an average of 31.2 at the strike rate of 141.82. He will be a good option for the opening slot but may not get a chance as a keeper due to the presence of skipper MS Dhoni. He played 132 T20s and scored 2441 runs at an average of 22.19 with the strike rate of 128.06.
- Murali Vijay
Murali Vijay, the right- handed batsman was a versatile opener for the Chennai Super Kings team since the inception of IPL. He is a quality batsman besides an expert spinner. He was the highest scorer in the Champions League 2010 in South Africa. He played a crucial role in the title-clinching victory of the team in 2011 against RCB by scoring 95 runs off 52 balls. He has a long experience of opening for the team. This makes him a competent opener though he did not play T20 cricket for a long time. He scored 3727 runs from 153 T20s, with a strike rate of 121.55 at an average of 25.52.
